The Ohio School Counselor Association Board of Directors holds elections each fall, electing three (3) at-large Directors who serve a three (3) year term. The board is a representative body of the membership and cannot exist without the support of strong leaders. The elections take place through a secured electronic vote.

To serve as a Director, a member must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a professional member of OSCA in good standing
  • Be employed as a practicing school counselor in a preK-12 setting in Ohio or as a counselor educator based in Ohio directly involved in the training of pre-service school counselors at the time of election or appointment
  • Hold a valid school counselor license issued by the State of Ohio

Not only does one need to meet these qualifications to run for the Board of Directors, but one must maintain these qualifiecations throughout their term. This should be taken into consideration when deciding whether to submit a nomination (i.e. you plan to retire sometime during the term).

Interested persons are encouraged to submit their nomination when the call for candidates is sent out each fall.

Members of the OSCA Board of Directors are responsible for determining the overall direction of the organization, ensuring the organization does what it needs on behalf of its members and avoids what it shouldn’t do. Board members are expected to be knowledgeable about OSCA, its guiding principles and current activities. Board members are responsible for the governance of the organization, including ensuring compliance with OSCA codes of regulation, establishing policies, monitoring compliance with the policies, establishing linkages with OSCA members and completing all tasks necessary to meet these responsibilities. Service on the board requires attendance at the following:

      • Five (5) annual board meetings (2 in-person and 3 virtual)
      • OSCA Annual Conference (typically three days in October)
      • OSCA Legislative Advocacy Day (one-day event typically held in late fall or spring)
      • ASCA Elevate Leadership Institute (2-day event held prior to ASCA conference in summer)
      • Possible assignments to represent OSCA on various state committees
      • Additional in-person or virtual commitments may be called throughout the year
