School Counselors in Ohio
had a significant victory on Friday, July 17th. The Ohio General
Assembly adopted the Governor's evidenced-based model of school
funding/reform and the Governor signed the bill into law.
The bill established a formula for school districts to follow; which
included a school counselor to student ratio of 1 to 250 for grades 6 -
12 beginning in 2012.
This is the first ratio for school counselors, since the early 1980's.
In addition, counselors have been advocating for a definition of the
role of a school counselor in the law, and this bill also provides a
definition for school counselors.
If you would like to see the actual copy of the bill, click on:
http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/bills.cfm?ID=128_HB_1
(pg. 1065) Definition of a School Counselor
(pg. 1088) 1:250 School Counselor to Student Ratio |
The wording of these two
sections of the bill can also be seen on this website, located at the
top of the OHIO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION page.
Be sure to congratulate the work done by counselors across the state, in
particular the work by the Ohio School Counselor Association and by the
Towner Policy Group, as well as the counselors, students, and counselor
educators who sent letters, met with their representatives, and traveled
to Columbus to provide testimony.
This is truly a significant accomplishment for counseling in Ohio!

Association - President |
