The Ohio School Counselor Association (OSCA), the Ohio Association for College Admission Counseling (OACAC), the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and the Ohio College Access Network (OCAN), have joined together this year to advance the delivery of relevant college access training opportunities in all regions of the state specifically geared towards school counselors. This initiative is funded by a $150,000 Challenge Grant through the Ohio Board of Regents.
Among the organizations, a range of topics will be covered throughout the year including college admissions and selection, financial aid, college savings, college entrance and readiness assessments, identifying student aspirations, career-technical education, college completion, working with underserved populations, developing partnerships and developing a college-going culture.
OSCA is specifically using its portion of the grant to fund three main initiatives:
- Publication of a special edition of the OSCA Advocate solely focused on college advising topics (PDF version and additional articles not published can be access in the Member's Only section of the OSCA website)
- Offering of a college advising track during the All Ohio Conference including national experts
- Offering of scholarships to the AOCC for school counselors working in low-income schools and those new to the profession
- Offering of regionally located workshops throughout Ohio on a college advising topic
Grant funds will allow OSCA to provide many of these opportunities at no or limited cost to members. Please visit this site or those of our partner groups to stay up to speed with all the opportunities being provided.
